Cat Scratching

Scratching is a normal behavior your cat does to clean away scales from its nails and mark territory. Provide your cat with any of the following:
bulletA log with the bark intact
bulletA cardboard box
bulletA rope scratching post

Place the scratching log near a favorite sleeping place and be sure to reinforce his good "scratching" behavior by praising him whenever he scratches appropriate items.

Entice him to use the post by putting catnip on it. A simple, firm "no" said toward inappropriate scratching and showing him the right place will reinforce the good behavior.
