Cleaning Pet Odors - What Really Works?

bulletFind all soiled areas – a black light will show even old stains.
bulletClean the areas with an enzyme cleanser specially formulated for pet urine and feces.
bulletMake these areas unattractive or unavailable to your pet.
bulletMake the appropriate bathroom area attractive by keeping it very clean, choosing a better location for your pet, etc.
bulletTeach your pet to use this place by using positive reinforcement training techniques and close supervision or confinement. Be patient.

Cleaning methods to avoid

bulletSteam cleaners permanently set in the odor.
bulletChemicals, especially ones with strong odors like ammonia or vinegar, may encourage your pet to mark over the odor.

Cleaning washable items

bulletMachine wash adding either baking soda or enzymatic cleanser (read instructions carefully).
bulletWhile training, cover your belongings with vinyl, plastic or anything easy to clean and that's unattractive to your pet.

Cleaning carpets & upholstery

bulletSoak up as much of the urine as possible.
bullet(Place a little of the soaked paper in the designated “potty” area to encourage your pet to go there.)
bulletRinse with cool water and remove as much of the water as possible (also remove any other traces of cleaners used before as they can neutralize the effect of the enzymes).
bulletUse the enzyme cleansers following the manufacturer's directions and always test them in a hidden area first.
